There's a coffee mug on my desk. Does that mean I love coffee? Think about it for a second. Maybe someone else left it there. Maybe it's full of tea. Maybe I just needed something to keep my hands warm.

That instinct -- the refusal to let a single fact carry more weight than it deserves -- is the foundation of everything you'll do in LSAT Logical Reasoning. And I've given it a name: "Just because ___ doesn't mean ___."

What Is "Just Because Doesn't Mean"?

This technique is a way of structuring any LSAT argument in your head so you can see its weakness immediately. You take the argument's premise (the fact it gives you), you take its conclusion (the claim it makes based on that fact), and you say to yourself -- with disdain and suspicion in your voice:

"Just because [premise] doesn't mean [conclusion]."

One sentence. But it forces your brain to do something powerful: it separates what you know from what the argument wants you to believe, and it makes the gap between them obvious.

Here's the thing -- the arguments you encounter on the LSAT are not good arguments. They're bad arguments. They take a specific premise and stretch it into a broad, extreme conclusion that the premise simply can't support. Your job is to see them as bad arguments, and "just because doesn't mean" is the lens that makes that possible.

Seeing It in Action

Let me walk you through some everyday examples that make this click before you ever touch an LSAT question:

Jason is seven feet tall, therefore he is in the NBA. Sure, Jason might be in the NBA. But just because someone is seven feet tall doesn't mean they have to be a professional basketball player. The height is a specific fact. The NBA conclusion is a massive leap. Could he be in the NBA? Maybe. Can we conclude it from his height alone? Absolutely not.

The sun is shining, therefore today is going to be the best day ever. The sun is shining -- great. But the best day in the whole entire world? A more reasonable conclusion might be "it probably won't rain today" or "today might be a decent day." The argument goes wrong because it jumps from a modest premise to an extreme conclusion.

I studied for 15 minutes, therefore I'm going to get an A+. You studied -- that's a fact. But fifteen minutes doesn't guarantee top marks. Now, if someone said "I studied for months, used every resource, and was incredibly diligent -- therefore I expect an A+" -- that's a much better argument because the premise actually earns the conclusion. On the LSAT, you won't get the good version. You'll get the bad one, and you need to spot it.

Why This Is THE Fundamental Skill

Every one of those examples follows the same pattern: a specific premise paired with a broad conclusion that the premise can't support on its own. I like to use a tug-of-war analogy: the premise sits on one side and the conclusion on the other, connected by a rope. When you analyze an argument, you're not attacking the premise (you're not saying Jason isn't seven feet tall) and you're not attacking the conclusion (you're not saying he's definitely not in the NBA). You're examining the rope -- the support relationship. You're pointing out that the premise isn't strong enough to hold up the conclusion.

This distinction matters enormously. A lot of students try to prove the conclusion wrong or argue that the premise is false. That's not what the LSAT is testing. It's testing whether you can recognize that a given fact does not necessarily lead to a given claim.


Snowballing: From Silly to Smart (And Why That's the Point)

So you've spotted the gap. You've said to yourself, with all the suspicion you can muster, "Just because this doesn't mean that." Now what?

This is where most students get stuck. They try to reverse-engineer the one perfect prediction that will match the right answer choice. They want to be a hawk -- swoop in, snatch the answer, done.

That's not how this works. You want to be a vulture, not a hawk. You don't need one killer prediction. You need a whole flock of them, circling and circling until the right answer has nowhere to hide. I call this snowballing.

How Snowballing Works

  1. Put the argument into "just because ___ doesn't mean ___" form.
  2. Ask yourself: why? Why doesn't the premise guarantee the conclusion?
  3. Start rattling off "maybes." Don't try to be perfect. Start silly. Start weird. Start anywhere. Your predictions will naturally get more common-sense and realistic as you go.

That progression from silly to sensible is the snowball rolling downhill. Each prediction feeds the next.

The Driving Example

Take a simple argument: I'm about to drive down the street without glasses, therefore I'm going to crash.

"Just because I'm driving without glasses doesn't mean I'm going to crash."

Now, the maybes:

  • Maybe I'm wearing contacts.
  • Maybe it's a really sunny, clear day with great visibility.
  • Maybe it's a self-driving car.
  • Maybe the street is really wide.
  • Maybe there are no other cars on the road.

None of these are fancy. But each one chips away at the idea that driving without glasses must lead to a crash. The premise just isn't enough to guarantee the conclusion. We're not saying the conclusion is wrong -- maybe I will crash. We're saying the premise alone doesn't prove it.

The Jonathan Example

Now here's where snowballing really shines. A tougher argument: Jonathan has gone to the grocery store every Monday for the past two years. Therefore, he will go next Monday.

"Just because Jonathan has gone every Monday for two years doesn't mean he'll go next Monday."

Why not? Well...

  • Maybe Jonathan will be dead. (Yes, really. Start there.)

Is that going to be the answer choice? Almost certainly not. But here's what happens. Your brain goes, "Okay, dead is extreme. What's less extreme?" And suddenly you're rolling:

  • Maybe Jonathan is sick.
  • Maybe he has to take his kids to the doctor.
  • Maybe he has a different appointment that Monday.
  • Maybe he has meetings all day.
  • Maybe he's just really busy next week.

You went from "maybe he's dead" to "maybe he's busy" -- and that second one sounds a whole lot like an actual answer choice. You got there by giving yourself permission to start anywhere.

The Ice Cream Example

One more. The chocolate ice cream is gone from the freezer. Therefore, Jennifer ate it.

"Just because the ice cream is gone doesn't mean Jennifer ate it."

  • Maybe someone threw it out.
  • Maybe someone fed it to raccoons. (I know, I know -- but it gets the wheels turning.)
  • Maybe someone else ate it.
  • Maybe there was a party and lots of people were there.
  • Maybe Jennifer's siblings love chocolate ice cream even more.
  • Maybe Jennifer is allergic to chocolate. (Silly -- but wait...)
  • Maybe Jennifer is lactose intolerant. (Getting warmer.)
  • Maybe Jennifer is on a diet avoiding sweets or dairy.

You started with raccoons and ended with a completely reasonable prediction. That's snowballing doing its job.

Why Starting Silly Works

Perfection paralysis is the enemy of the LSAT. When you sit there trying to think of the one right answer before looking at the choices, your brain locks up. You burn time. You second-guess yourself.

Starting silly breaks that lock. It gets the juices flowing, gives you permission to think freely, and once you're thinking freely, your natural common sense takes over.

How This Helps With Answer Choices

By the time you look at the five answer choices, you're not reading them cold. You've already generated a cloud of predictions -- your flock of vultures -- and the right answer is almost certainly in the neighborhood of something you already thought of. Instead of evaluating five equally confusing options, you're scanning for the one that matches the common-sense weakness you already identified. The more "maybes" you have circling, the more obvious the right answer becomes.


The Formal Logic Connection: Sufficient vs. Necessary

Here's something that might surprise you: "just because ___ doesn't mean ___" isn't just a casual reasoning tool. It's actually the intuitive, everyday-language version of one of the most important formal logic concepts on the LSAT -- the difference between sufficient and necessary conditions.

The NBA Example, Revisited

Remember Jason? "Just because Jason is seven feet tall doesn't mean he's in the NBA." That feels like common sense. But here's what's happening in formal logic terms:

Being in the NBA is a sufficient condition for being tall. If you're in the NBA, then you're at least five feet tall -- every single NBA player clears that bar. The logic flows in one direction: NBA → tall.

But being tall is not sufficient for being in the NBA. Millions of tall people have nothing to do with professional basketball. Height is necessary for the NBA (you need some height to play), but it's not sufficient (height alone doesn't get you there). The logic does NOT flow backward: tall → NBA is invalid.

When someone says "Jason is tall, therefore he's in the NBA," they're confusing these two directions. They're taking something that works one way (NBA guarantees tallness) and assuming it works the other way (tallness guarantees NBA). That confusion between sufficient and necessary conditions is one of the most heavily tested errors on the LSAT.

Contrapositives: The Valid Flip

In conditional logic, if A leads to B (if NBA, then tall), there's exactly one valid way to flip it -- the contrapositive: if NOT B, then NOT A (if not tall, then not NBA). That's a perfectly valid inference.

But here's the trap the LSAT sets: Not A does NOT lead to Not B. If someone is NOT in the NBA, that does NOT mean they're not tall. That's an invalid inference -- and it's exactly the error that "just because doesn't mean" catches.

"Just because Jason is NOT in the NBA doesn't mean he's NOT tall." You're rejecting the invalid inference. You're recognizing that the logic only flows one way.

Why This Matters for You

The LSAT tests this confusion constantly. Conditional indicator words like "if," "when," "all," "every," "unless," and "only if" set up one-directional relationships. The test then checks whether you mistakenly reverse them.

Here's what I want you to understand: you don't need to memorize formal logic rules before you can reason correctly. If you've internalized "just because ___ doesn't mean ___," you're already doing conditional logic -- you just might not have the formal vocabulary for it yet. The formal framework gives you precision and speed, but the instinct is the same one you've been building all along.

Think of it this way: "just because doesn't mean" is driving with your gut feel for the road. Conditional logic is learning why the road curves where it does. Both get you to the same destination, and the best students use both simultaneously.


One Technique, Many Question Types

Here's what makes "just because doesn't mean" so powerful: it's not a trick that only works on one question type. Once you internalize this way of thinking, it unlocks question after question across Logical Reasoning.

Weaken Questions: The Natural Home

Weaken questions are where this technique lives most comfortably. Take the argument, say "just because [premise] doesn't mean [conclusion]," then ask why by generating maybes.

The grass looks beautiful, therefore the gardener came yesterday. "Just because the grass looks beautiful doesn't mean the gardener came yesterday. Maybe the gardener came three days ago. Maybe my little brother mowed the lawn. Maybe no one mowed at all and the sun and rain just did their thing."

Each maybe is a potential weakener. And remember -- you're not saying the conclusion is wrong, and you're not saying the premise is false. You're attacking the support relationship: the premise is not enough to guarantee the conclusion. That's all weakening is.

Flaw Questions: Naming the Gap

Flaw questions use the exact same thinking, with one twist: instead of the answer being a weakener, it describes the reasoning error.

Say the argument is: "He's wearing a blue shirt, therefore blue must be his favorite color." Your maybes are the same as on a Weaken question -- maybe it was a gift, maybe it was the first shirt he grabbed. But on a Flaw question, the answer choice says something like: "The argument fails to consider that wearing a particular color does not establish it as a preference."

Same gap, same thinking, different packaging. The "just because doesn't mean" pattern is the flaw -- the argument assumed something follows from the premise when it doesn't.

Necessary Assumption Questions: Looking Backward

Necessary Assumption questions flip the perspective. Instead of "what could weaken this argument?", they ask "what must the author have been assuming for this argument to work at all?"

The method is elegant: generate your weakeners first, then say the author is necessarily assuming those weakeners are not the case.

The driving example: "Jonathan is about to drive without glasses, therefore he's going to crash." Your weakeners: maybe he wears contacts, maybe his glasses are only for reading, maybe it's a self-driving car. Now flip: the author is necessarily assuming Jonathan is not wearing contacts, that he doesn't only need glasses for reading, and that it's not a self-driving car.

Think about it this way -- if the author believed any of your major weakeners were true, they never would have made the argument in the first place. So by identifying the gap, you're simultaneously revealing what must be assumed to bridge it.

Strengthen Questions: Flipping the Script

Strengthen questions are the mirror image. Instead of finding why the conclusion doesn't follow, you're finding what would make it more likely to follow. The starting point is identical -- find the gap first. Then instead of widening it (weaken), close it. Your weakeners become strengtheners when you reverse them: "maybe he's wearing contacts" becomes "he is definitely not wearing contacts" -- and now the argument is stronger.

The Common Thread

Every question type revolves around the same skill: identifying the gap between what is given and what is claimed.

  • On Weaken questions, you widen the gap with alternative explanations.
  • On Flaw questions, you name the gap in formal language.
  • On Necessary Assumption questions, you identify what must be true for the gap not to exist.
  • On Strengthen questions, you close the gap by eliminating alternatives.

Once you see this, Logical Reasoning stops being five or six separate question types requiring separate strategies. It's one skill -- gap analysis through "just because doesn't mean" -- expressed in different ways.


Taking It Further: Advanced Applications

The LSAT doesn't stop at straightforward arguments. As questions get harder, the arguments get subtler -- and this technique goes from useful to indispensable.

Think About All the Players

One of the most common ways the LSAT raises difficulty is by introducing multiple parties into an argument. "I'm about to pick up this piece of paper, therefore I'm going to get a paper cut." Most students only generate predictions about the person -- maybe they're wearing gloves, maybe they're being careful. But what about the paper? Maybe it's laminated. Maybe it has smooth edges. Maybe it's thick construction paper.

Before you go to the answer choices, scan the argument for every entity involved and generate predictions for each one. The LSAT loves to hide the correct answer on the party you weren't thinking about.

From Concrete Predictions to Umbrellas

Concrete predictions are great, but what happens when none of your specific predictions appear in the answer choices? You need umbrella predictions: broader categories that your concrete predictions fall under.

"Maybe Jonathan is busy or unavailable" covers being sick, having a doctor's appointment, needing to drive his kids somewhere, and a dozen other specific scenarios. When you think in umbrellas, you can recognize a correct answer even when its wording is nothing like what you specifically predicted.

Chainsaws and Butter Knives

Early LR questions (1-10 or so) tend to have answers that take a chainsaw to the argument, completely destroying it. But harder questions toward the back half of the section? The correct answer might only take a butter knife to the argument -- making the conclusion slightly less likely without obliterating anything.

If you only look for devastating, argument-destroying answers, you'll miss these subtler weakeners. "Just because doesn't mean" trains you to see that even a small gap between premise and conclusion is still a gap -- and on the LSAT, a gap is a gap.

This Actually Makes You Faster

I hear this worry all the time: "Won't making predictions slow me down?" The opposite is true. When you walk into the answer choices already knowing the general shape of what you're looking for, you eliminate wrong answers in seconds. The students who skip predictions and go straight to the choices are the ones who read every option three times, second-guess themselves, and burn through their clock.

Predictions aren't extra work -- they're the shortcut.

A Way of Thinking, Not Just a Test Trick

Here's what makes this framework genuinely powerful: it's not a gimmick. "Just because ___ doesn't mean ___" is how rigorous thinkers approach the world every day. Just because a company's stock went up last quarter doesn't mean it'll go up again. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they haven't thought deeply about it. Just because something has always been done a certain way doesn't mean it's the best way.

The LSAT is, at its core, a test of whether you can resist the pull of assumptions and think clearly under pressure. Every time you practice this framework -- generating predictions, considering all parties, thinking in umbrellas, calibrating between chainsaws and butter knives -- you're building a habit of mind that'll serve you in law school, in your legal career, and in every important decision you make.

So keep practicing. Keep questioning. And remember: just because mastering the LSAT feels impossible right now doesn't mean it is. You've got the tools. Now go use them.
